Continuous Synopsis Record (CSR) Forms and Guidance

The Continuous Synopsis Record (CSR) is in essence the history of a ship in the form of a logbook designed to follow the ship throughout its life. It not only supplies the ship’s history but also contains the main details such as:

  • The ship’s flag, name, and class
  • ISM Code compliance information
  • Ownership and management history
  • Charterer details and operator responsibility

Who Needs a CSR?

A CSR must be maintained for a variety of vessel types, including:

  • Passenger ships engaged in international voyages
  • Class A passenger ships operating domestic services in UK waters
  • Cargo ships of 500GT and above operating internationally

For UK-registered ships, CSRs are always issued in English.

Important CSR Requirements

  • Each vessel must carry its complete CSR file on board, including all historical records.
  • This obligation remains even if the vessel is:
    • Sold to a new owner
    • Transferred to another flag state
    • Managed by a different operating company
    • Taken over by a new bareboat charter

Easy Access to CSR Forms

All CSR forms (and most of the other maritime essential applications) are optimized for any device and hence they are mobile-friendly. This means vessel owners and operators can complete and submit them conveniently from their phone, tablet, or computer—anytime, anywhere.

Safe compliance means smooth sailing. Make sure that your ship’s CSR is always up to date and that it is on board at all times.

Continuous Synopsis Record (CSR) UK Requirements and Forms

The Continuous Synopsis Record (CSR) is a charter mandated by the SOLAS Convention to provide complete openness regarding the holder of the vessel without jeopardizing security measures or creating obstacles in international trade. It is not only a question of safe practices, but also a legal obligation to keep the CSR for a ship registered in the UK. Non-compliance may, among other things, lead to difficulties during port inspections or audits.

We at Vessel Registrar are committed to easing the process of CSR for you. Our experienced personnel regularly take up the responsibility of your correct form filling as well as its submission in accordance with the rules and regulations laid down by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), thus ensuring your compliance with UK and international standards.

What Is the Continuous Synopsis Record?

The CSR acts as a ship’s official logbook, documenting a continuous chain of information about the vessel, including:

  • Changes in ownership or management
  • Transfers of flag state
  • Alterations to the vessel’s name or classification society
  • Updates to company details and ISM Code compliance

This transparency is essential for regulatory oversight, security, and smooth international operations.

Which Vessels Require a CSR?

A CSR is mandatory for:

  • All passenger ships, regardless of size
  • Cargo ships of 500 GT or more engaged in international voyages
  • UK-flagged vessels subject to SOLAS requirements

Your ship will be able to work in the international markets and thus avoid both the waiting time and the penalties if you maintain your CSR up-to-date.
