commercially on the UK Ship Register.

What is Leisure registration?

Leisure registration may be used for the registration of a leisure vessel on the UK Ship Register under Part 1 (Pleasure) or Part 3 (Small Ship Register)

What is the difference between registering a leisure vessel under Part 1 (Pleasure) or Part 3 (Small Ship Register)?

The main differences between the two registers are the eligibility requirements and the proof needed to register. Part I of the Register is more of a title register and proof of ownership, which can also record details of any mortgages on the boat, whereas the SSR is more of a passport for your boat to enable you to go overseas.

What are the requirements to Register on the Small Ship Register?

To be eligible to register on the SSR your boat must be under 24 metres and privately owned. You must either be a British citizen; a non-UK citizen exercising your EU right of freedom of movement or worker’s right for establishment; British Dependant Territories citizens; British Overseas citizens; British subjects under the British Nationality Act 1981; British Nationals (overseas) under Hong Kong (British Nationality) Order 1986 or Commonwealth citizens not falling within this paragraph. You must also be ordinarily resident in the UK (which means living in the UK for periods which add up to 185 days or more in a 12 month period

What is provisional registration?

Provisional registration conveys no entitlement to register a ship under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. Provisional registration may be used in the event the vessel must travel before completing registration.

Can I fish for profit with a provisional registration?

Provisional registration conveys no entitlement to fish for profit. If a ship is fishing for profit, its Certificate will immediately terminate.

How long is provisional registration valid for?

Certificate is valid either for three months from the date of issue, the ships arrival in the United Kingdom or termination by the Registry on request from the owner, whichever is sooner. Please note a provisional certificate can not be renewed.

Do I need to renew my registration?

Part I registration lasts for 5 years. Three months before the expiry date, the Registry will issue a renewal notice to the registered owner which is to be completed and returned (with accompanying fee) to extend the registration for a further five years.

What is Part 1 – Commercial or Pleasure Vessel Registration?

This registration applies to seagoing vessels in the UK that either operate for personal leisure or serve a commercial function. Under UK law, vessels over a certain size or those intended for international use often require Part 1 - Commercial or Pleasure Vessel Registration. Whether you own a superyacht for cruising or a fishing boat that supports your business, this registration formalizes your vessel’s status on the UK Ship Register.

It’s not a one-size-fits-all process. That’s where we come in. We assist vessel owners with either commercial or pleasure use registration, ensuring all required forms and documentation are handled properly, reducing the likelihood of delays or rejections.
Who Needs to File for Part 1 – Commercial or Pleasure Vessel Registration?
This registration is most appropriate for:

Owners of seagoing vessels who need proof of ownership recognized internationally
Those intending to mortgage their vessel, as lenders typically require Part 1 registration
Businesses operating fishing vessels, workboats, or charter vessels
Individuals who own leisure vessels used in UK or international waters
Companies or partnerships looking to establish clear title and identity of the vessel

If any of these apply to you, our service streamlines the filing process with full guidance at every step.
Is Part 1 Registration Mandatory?
It depends on how the vessel is used. Part 1 registration is not legally required for every vessel, but it becomes essential if:

You plan to use your vessel outside UK inland waters
You need to prove legal ownership, especially for sale or financing purposes
You intend to register the vessel under a mortgage
You operate a commercial vessel and need to demonstrate compliance with maritime regulations

Our platform helps you determine if Part 1 is the correct path based on your vessel’s size, purpose, and location of use.
What Counts as a Commercial Vessel?
A commercial vessel is one used to earn income, regardless of whether you own it as an individual or through a company. Examples include:

Charter vessels (bareboat, skippered, or crewed)
Fishing vessels
Workboats used in construction, surveying, or diving
Tour boats or sightseeing vessels
Vessels that transport goods or passengers

Registering a vessel as commercial under Part 1 gives it an official status that supports commercial operations and ensures that it meets necessary safety and documentation standards.
What Is a Pleasure Vessel Under Part 1 Registration?
Pleasure vessels are those used solely for personal enjoyment without any income-generating activity. Common examples include:

Yachts used for private recreation
Motorboats and sailboats used on holidays
Family vessels not rented out or hired

Even if you're not using your boat for business purposes, Part 1 registration for a pleasure vessel offers benefits such as proof of title, eligibility for certain flag states, and access to international ports.
Can You Switch Between Commercial and Pleasure Designation?
Yes, and many vessel owners do. If your circumstances change, such as beginning to charter your vessel or choosing to retire it from commercial use, you can update your designation. We help with the documentation needed to reflect that transition properly.

Changing from commercial to pleasure (or vice versa) involves submitting updated details and, in some cases, supplementary documentation. Using our online portal, we make this process straightforward and secure.
What Documents Are Required for Part 1 – Commercial or Pleasure Vessel?
Required documentation varies slightly depending on your vessel’s purpose, but generally includes:

Evidence of ownership (such as a Bill of Sale)
Certificate of measurement (tonnage and dimensions)
Proof of eligibility (such as a declaration of residency or company registration)
Vessel details including build information, name, and engine specifications

For commercial vessels, additional requirements may apply depending on the type of operation. We provide comprehensive guidance to ensure you submit all necessary documents without confusion or delay.
Does the Size of the Vessel Matter?
Yes, size and type influence whether Part 1 registration is necessary or appropriate. Vessels eligible for Part 1 typically include:

Vessels over 24 meters used commercially
Leisure vessels above a certain tonnage
Yachts and powerboats used internationally
Boats requiring international recognition of ownership

If your vessel doesn’t meet the minimum tonnage for Part 1 but you’re still interested in formal registration, we can help you determine if another type of registration (such as Small Ships Register) might suit your needs.
Can Non-UK Residents Register Under Part 1?
Yes. If you are not a UK resident but have ties through a company or representative located in the UK, you can still register your vessel. Corporate ownership is also allowed under specific criteria.

Our service helps international clients register their vessels under the UK flag. Whether you are based abroad or have a vessel stationed outside the UK, we can support your application through our remote submission process.
What Are the Benefits of Part 1 Registration?
There are many reasons vessel owners opt for this form of registration:

Offers formal proof of ownership
Accepted worldwide as an official registry
Required for vessel mortgages
Allows naming of vessel and unique UK Official Number
Provides confidence in legal title for buyers and lenders
Necessary for many commercial operations in the UK and abroad

Our service ensures your registration application is accurate and complete, reducing the chance of rejection or processing delays.

Do I Need to Renew My Part 1 Registration?

Yes. Registration under Part 1 is valid for five years. Before the expiry date, it must be renewed to remain active. You can renew early to avoid a lapse in status.

We assist with renewals, reminders, and updates to ensure your vessel remains properly registered. Our system keeps your information organized so that you’re never caught off guard.
Can You Help With a Change of Ownership?
Absolutely. If you’re buying or selling a registered vessel, the change of ownership must be filed with the UK Ship Register. This involves submitting a new Bill of Sale and updating ownership records.

We handle the process on your behalf, guiding both the buyer and seller through the transition. Our portal allows you to securely submit the documents needed to finalize the transfer.

What is Part 2 Fishing Vessel Registration?

Part 2 Fishing Vessel Registration is a legal registration under the UK Ship Register that applies specifically to commercial fishing vessels. If you operate a fishing vessel for profit within UK waters, this registration confirms your vessel’s legal status and allows you to operate within commercial fishing regulations. Through this process, your vessel receives an official identity, which includes its registration number and details entered into the UK Ship Register.

This registration type is distinct from other parts of the UK registry because it pertains solely to vessels involved in fishing for commercial gain. If your boat is used to catch and sell fish or shellfish, even part-time, this form of registration is essential.

At UK Vessel Registrar, we help streamline the application process. We provide an intuitive, secure portal where you can complete and submit the necessary documentation without dealing with the stress of manual government forms.
Who Needs to Apply for Part 2 Fishing Vessel Registration?
If you own or operate a fishing vessel in the United Kingdom and use it to catch and sell fish or shellfish, you are required by law to register under Part 2. Whether your operation is large-scale or limited to a small crew, commercial intent makes this registration mandatory.

Examples of those who need this registration include:

Independent fishermen who sell their daily catch
Operators of commercial trawlers
Boat owners involved in shellfish harvesting
Those involved in fishery support services

This registration also applies if you intend to fish in UK waters and later expand into international territories, as it gives your vessel an identity recognized by maritime authorities.
How Part 2 - Fishing Vessel Registration Can Help You
Registering your vessel under Part 2 offers several key benefits. This process is not just about compliance — it’s about establishing legitimacy and increasing operational access.

It allows you to legally fish in UK waters for commercial purposes.
It gives your vessel a unique registration number and proves ownership.
It adds your boat to an official registry, which can assist in resolving disputes.
It improves your credibility with clients, buyers, and regulatory authorities.
It supports eligibility for licenses and quotas from relevant marine management agencies.
It is often required if you intend to sell your vessel in the future or secure marine financing.

Our service ensures you receive these benefits while eliminating the delays and headaches that can occur when applying through traditional government channels.

Ongoing support from our team should you have questions or concerns

Instead of navigating government forms on your own, you can let our platform streamline everything. We’ve designed the portal to be accessible and effective for all vessel operators, no matter your experience level with registration forms.
What Information and Documents Are Required for Part 2 Fishing Vessel Registration?
To complete a successful application, you will need to submit accurate vessel and ownership information. While each case may vary, typical documents and details include:

A completed application for registration
Proof of ownership (such as a bill of sale or builder’s certificate)
Evidence of eligibility to register (such as UK citizenship or company registration)
Details of the vessel (including name, dimensions, tonnage, and construction data)
Fishing license details, if already issued
Declaration of eligibility

We help clarify what’s needed based on your situation, and our system ensures you won’t miss a step.
Do I Need to Register My Fishing Vessel If It’s Small?
Yes. The size of the vessel does not exempt you from the requirement if you are fishing commercially. Part 2 - Fishing Vessel Registration applies regardless of vessel size. Whether you fish from a small inshore boat or a larger offshore vessel, registration is required if you’re selling your catch or operating under a commercial license.

Our portal is particularly useful for small boat operators who may not have prior experience with maritime registrations. We offer the same fast and accessible platform for every size of fishing operation.
Can I Change My Vessel’s Details After Registration?
Yes. If you need to update ownership information, vessel name, or other registration data, you will be required to file an amendment. These changes are handled through formal processes with the UK Ship Register. Through our platform, we make those updates easier to file. Instead of starting from scratch, we guide you through the process of modifying your vessel’s information accurately and efficiently.
Is Renewal Required for Part 2 Fishing Vessel Registration?
Part 2 registrations must be maintained over time. This may include periodic renewal or revalidation of ownership, depending on your circumstances. Failing to keep your registration current may affect your vessel’s legality in UK waters.

We offer reminders and renewal assistance directly through our portal. With us, you won’t miss a renewal deadline or be caught off-guard by administrative requirements.
Can I Register More Than One Fishing Vessel?
Yes, and we can help with that too. If you operate multiple commercial vessels, each one must be registered individually under Part 2. Our platform makes it easy to manage several applications simultaneously, with records for each vessel stored in one convenient place.

Whether you’re a fleet operator or expanding your fishing business, our system is designed to support multi-vessel registration efficiently.
Does This Registration Prove Ownership?
Yes. A key benefit of Part 2 - Fishing Vessel Registration is that it provides an official record of ownership. This can be useful in legal disputes, when securing insurance, or during vessel sales.

Ownership is recorded as part of the UK Ship Register, and your official certificate can serve as proof in various maritime dealings. We ensure all ownership information is submitted properly and matches the registry’s requirements.
What Happens If I Sell My Vessel?
If you transfer ownership of a registered fishing vessel, you’ll need to notify the registry and remove or update your name from the record. This is an important part of protecting your liability and maintaining the registry’s accuracy.

Our system allows you to start the transfer process easily, and we can guide you through the requirements for both the seller and the new owner.
How to Start Your Application with Us
To begin your Part 2 - Fishing Vessel Registration, simply visit our application page and follow the steps laid out there. You’ll be prompted to enter vessel details, upload documentation, and submit payment — all from one secure location.

We’ve helped many fishing vessel owners like you avoid delays, confusion, and paperwork issues. Let us simplify the process so you can get back to what you do best: running your fishing operation.

What is the Small Ships Register?

Part of the United Kingdom’s official ship registry system, this offers a more accessible option for small, non-commercial boats. The Small Ships Register—also known as Part 3 of the UK Ship Register—was specifically designed to simplify the registration process for leisure boaters. At UK Vessel Registrar, we help streamline the application process, ensuring that vessel owners can meet their obligations while avoiding unnecessary delays or confusion.

This is an ideal option for UK residents who own pleasure crafts under 24 meters in length and use them solely for personal, non-commercial purposes. Registration is valid for five years and can be renewed. It’s a cost-effective way to establish ownership, prove nationality, and ensure that your vessel is identifiable while navigating UK waters.
Who Can Register a Vessel on the Small Ships Register?
Only individuals who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom can apply to register a vessel on the Small Ships Register. The register is not available to corporations or partnerships—it’s strictly for private individuals. You must provide a UK address and demonstrate residency as part of the registration process.

There are also requirements related to the vessel itself. The boat must be less than 24 meters in length and intended solely for personal use. Commercial vessels, bareboat charter vessels, and those used for trade or business are not eligible for inclusion on this register. If your boat is to be used in any commercial context, then Part 1 registration would be required instead.

In practical terms, the registration process for leisure boaters is commonly used by owners of yachts, motorboats, RIBs, and sailboats.
Who Should Not Use the Small Ships Register?
Vessels involved in any kind of commercial activity—whether carrying cargo, passengers, or being offered for hire—are ineligible for this register. Likewise, if your vessel exceeds 24 meters in length or is owned by a business entity rather than an individual, then this register is not the right path.

In these cases, other parts of the UK Ship Register, such as Part 1 or Part 4, may be more appropriate depending on how you intend to use the vessel.

It's also worth noting that this register does not provide proof of title or ownership history. For those seeking more comprehensive documentation or planning to use their vessel abroad, another form of registration may be required.
What Does Registration on the Small Ships Register Provide?
Being listed on this register offers several benefits. First, it provides your vessel with an official identity, including a unique SSR number that must be displayed clearly on the hull. This number is helpful for search and rescue teams in case of emergencies, and it can also ease interactions with port authorities.

First, it provides your vessel with an official identity, including a unique SSR number that must be displayed clearly on the hull. This number is helpful for search and rescue teams in case of emergencies, and it can also ease interactions with port authorities.

Additionally, registration establishes your boat’s nationality. This can be useful in certain international contexts, though it's important to remember that this form of registration is not always accepted outside the UK. Some countries require more formal documentation, such as Part 1 registration, before they will recognize a foreign-flagged vessel.
How Long is the Small Ships Register Valid?
Once completed, the registration remains valid for a full five years. After that, the vessel owner must renew the registration to keep it active. If the boat is sold, transferred, destroyed, or scrapped before that period ends, the registration can be canceled or allowed to lapse.
Common Mistakes to Avoid During Registration
Although the Small Ships Register is meant to be simple, many boaters find themselves frustrated by delays or rejected applications due to small mistakes. These often include:

Incomplete or inconsistent information on the application form
Providing a non-UK address
Listing commercial use
Not including required measurements of the vessel

By working with us, you can reduce the chances of these errors slowing down the process. Our online portal simplifies everything from form access to submission tracking.

We make these forms more accessible by offering digital versions through our secure portal. No need to mail documents; complete everything online with support available if you have any questions.
Displaying Your SSR Number
After your registration is approved, your vessel will be assigned a Small Ships Register number. This number must be painted or affixed clearly and permanently on the hull of the boat. The SSR number is a way authorities identify your boat on the water, in port, or during search and rescue operations.

This visible identification is an essential part of compliance and helps differentiate registered vessels from unregistered ones. It’s also a quick way to provide proof that your boat is part of the official registry.
The Convenience of Online Registration
By using our online portal, you skip many of the most frustrating parts of vessel registration. No more wondering whether your form was received or filling out paperwork by hand. Everything is done digitally, with confirmation sent directly to your inbox.

You also receive updates about your registration status and renewal reminders as your five-year term comes to a close. These simple but valuable services reduce stress and allow you to focus on enjoying your time on the water instead of getting bogged down in red tape.
