Owners of merchant/commercial vessels not used for fishing or vessels used solely for pleasure who want to operate under the UK flag should use this form to apply for registration.

Can fishing vessels use this form to register?

No. This form is for commercial vessels not used for fishing and for pleasure vessels only. Fishing vessels must follow a different registration process.

What is Part 1 of the UK Ship Register?

Part 1 is a section of the UK Ship Register available to commercial vessels not used for fishing and to pleasure vessels. It provides full title registration for eligible vessels.

What are the benefits of registering my vessel on Part 1?

Registering on Part 1 allows you to record a marine mortgage against your boat and enables you to spend more than 6 months outside the UK.

When is my vessel considered registered?

Your vessel is not registered until a Certificate of Registry has been issued.

What vessel information is required on the application?

You will be asked for proposed vessel names (in order of preference), port of choice, IMO/HIN (if known), radio call signs (if known), MMSI (if known), approximate length, vessel type, year of build, construction material, builder’s name, and the builder’s address. You should also state whether the vessel was previously registered.

What owner or applicant details do I need to provide?

Provide the owner’s or company’s full name, address, phone number and email address. Title is optional. You can also indicate if you are the permanent agent for the owner.

Which vessel categories and weights are eligible on this form?

You may apply for Merchant or Pleasure vessels in weight bands Under 100GT, 100–499GT, or Over 500GT.

Do I need an IMO number, HIN, call signs, or MMSI to apply?

These identifiers can be provided if known, but they are not mandatory to submit the application.

How do I choose the vessel’s port of choice?

Select a UK port of choice during the application (for example, Aberdeen). This will be recorded on the registration.

Can I appoint a permanent agent for correspondence?

Yes. You can declare that you are the permanent agent for the owner and request that all correspondence is sent to the permanent agent.

What if the vessel was previously registered?

You will be asked to confirm whether the vessel has been registered before and to provide any relevant previous registration details.
